You might be surprised to learn that the human population and cats have been linked together for more than a thousand years. Though dogs may be the most popular pet, the feline species are sitting firmly at the second most popular spot. Even if your work or school takes you away from home for long periods of time, cats will still make a charming pet.

Your average dog must be walked often, whereas cats need their food and a bit of attention from their owners. Additionally, because they adjust so well, felines are great for most anyone’s living areas, including apartments. Their ideal pet status is cemented by the fact that they show affection easily, adore play, and are very loyal.

Most of the cats kept as pets are not pedigree, meaning that they have been mixed with different breeds. Only 3 percent of domestic cats are purebred, there are no distinct advantages or disadvantages of buying a purebred and they can be very expensive. There are different groups that have nonetheless classified more than 100 types of purebred cats.

Examining the different breeds will reveal the distinct types of body shapes, coat lengths, color of coat, eye color, and size of the animal. Cats can be categorized as the short haired or long haired variety. The short hairs outnumber the long haired varieties.

Long haired cats are harder to take care of, require more daily grooming, and run a higher risk of hairballs. Also, the long fur makes it more difficult to get rid of fleas, and harder to take care any cuts they may have.
